+ Time to Become More Sheikah than Princess +

It doesn't seem like anyone is going to protect me or save me. Seems as though I'll have to do that myself.

In an attempt to make myself feel safer I've bought a key entry doorknob, cameras, pepper spray, and a stun gun. Of course, I discovered our house doesn't even want me to protect myself as the door knobs don't come off our doors. The screws are for looks only, there's not hidden latch to detach the knobs from each other, they're just permanently in the doors. I've watched so many youtube videos trying to figure out if there's some kind of secret to my stupid door... But at least the cameras are set up in the rooms I'll be in most often. Hopefully hidden enough they'll never notice.

The pepper spray and stun gun are always on me now. At least in a pinch I'll be able to use them to hopefully get away. I have a recording app on my phone so any time I'm stuck in a room with him I can record to protect myself. I've also been watching youtube videos on self defense moves to knock out long enough to run. I need to practice them more.

I  also have a bag in my car ready in case I need to run I'll have some essentials. I also have a safe place to stay and hide where I won't be found, but can go day or night. I shared the threats with safe people. I'm doing everything possible to take care of myself. I just wish I didn't have to. I wish I was believed enough that I was safe. Maybe that's why I never told as a child, maybe I knew even then no one would believe me. Maybe this was my destiny.

I just hope that I don't lose my life because my Dad can't believe the truth of his own son.

+ The Pieces of her Heart +

Writing Prompt: Write a story that begins with the line, "She wanted me to break it".

She wanted me to break it. I knew as soon as I met her that I would crush her heart. She would always choose the wrong men to fall for. I certainly was no exception, but I still find it funny that she chose me knowing I'm not the kind to love. Hell, I'm not even the kind to stay interested. I toyed with every woman I laid my eyes on, she knew that better than anyone. The only conclusion is that she wanted me to destroy her.

We went to college together. She would fall for the kind of men that worked with her. The ones that clearly wanted no attachment, just to get in her pants and run away. God these men were catnip to her. She would get lonely and give them a chance, though rarely did she let them get lucky, They'd ditch her once they realized she wasn't going to bang them, but not before making her doubt herself. She'd almost be ready to give herself to them and they'd already have run.

How many times did I hold her as her broken heart throbbed? i couldn't begin to guess. I knew even then that she deserved so much better, even told her a time or two. She'd be a mess curled in my bed with me as I held her and kept my pants on.

She was kind and strong. She put on such a convincing facade of invincibility. I often forgot how fragile she could be. Her affection typically involved punching me. I never knew that was her way of showing me she was falling for me. She didn't know how to trust or say 'I love you'.

Somehow I broke down her defenses without ever knowing it and she was all mine. She spent night whispering her secrets in my ears. Telling me of her pain and showing off her scars. The childhood pain, the men that used her and left her aching, the abuse, and even the acknowledgment I was going to kill her. She knew even then I'd never be able to change for her. I promised I'd never hurt her. How could I? We were friends. I'd pick her up when she was hurting. She could see right through me.

And yet somehow she let me in anyway - I took her without a second thought. I've never spoken to her since.

+ Hearts Hurt Sometimes and It's Okay to Admit That +

The words that follow are not mine. They are Sarah Rodriguez's from Elephant Journal in the article "Messages from a Learning Heart". They could be mine right now, though, because it's exactly how I'm feeling. It's as if the words were taken right from my heart and pulled out through someone else's fingertips. So, not only am I going to link this article, I'm also going to copy and paste it with the acknowledgement that they aren't mine, but it's how I feel and I don't want to lose these words. It's part of the healing process.

Here's the Copied Article:

Messages from a Learning Heart

Let’s get one thing straight: this is not an attack.

Not on anyone or anything; not even on myself.

This is just who I am.

I don’t know how to do this any other way—how to express myself in a more efficient manner than trying to soothe my heart as she stumbles and bleeds without knowing why.

She’s never had such demands placed on her before. She’s never been forced open in a way that made her so vulnerable, so close to the throes of perceived danger, so ready and willing to fall into everything my mind has begged her to avoid.

And now, my mind sends piercing whispers to her in this moment of bewilderment: I told you so.
There’s a reason she prefers to be secluded, tucked away in the noisy confines of her outward silence—alone. She’s understood from the start that beyond the flesh and bones that surround her, it’s a cold world out there. She needs to be protected, concealed and unreachable. She knows she’d never make it outside of her cage; she is far too raw to save herself from the pain that comes with opening, emerging as a thing to be fooled for love and tossed when her temporary purpose has been depleted.

She can’t stand being temporary, but she’s never known permanence either. She just can’t handle feeling that she matters one moment, only to be named useless the next.

She can’t be so stripped, so out of control.

This heart, she’s been muffled for a lifetime; somewhere between where she rests and where words pour from my lips, a debilitating cloud of fear and self-consciousness suppresses the truth she longs to release. Every time. Yeah, it’s fine. It happens, you know? Whatever.

But really, it’s not fine. It’s not whatever.

Because hearts hurt sometimes, and it’s okay to admit that. It must be.

Because all she wants to do is cry out the words and let them fall as they may, in scattered puddles or in an ocean of all the things she never wanted to feel.

Perhaps there was never any intention of loving her—of loving me. This person. This heart. The one that fought her own personal battle just to open up despite the wisdom of her senses warning her to remain tightly sealed.

And for what? All for this something that became nothing before she could even define it as such.
She should have known better. She should have listened.

So now she sits here, somewhat defeated and worn, tormented by a situation she can’t quite comprehend, yet aware of every pulse that leaves her. She begins drawing conclusions about everything she did wrong—everything she’s ever done wrong—and she hears herself whisper the words “I’m sorry,” even though she doesn't know why. She must have made herself this way, this incompatible puzzle of the words she never said and the ones she said but never meant.

She questions her ability to be understood, to be accepted, to be loved. To be anything—everything.

And because she won’t let anyone else around, the only person she can blame is me.

Still, this is not an attack.

No; this is the soothing. This is the beginning-again of what once sought an end, a rude awakening in the silence of a long-held breath. This is the part when I must take up mending what was never fully broken; I couldn't keep the cage doors splayed long enough to let that happen. Maybe someday I will, and it will hurt that much more.

Or maybe someday I will, and the exchange will be different. Maybe someday, my heart will be the victor, sending gentle whispers to my mind in a moment of relief: I told you so.

But until then, I’m still learning.

This is just who I am—growing, hoping, trying, learning how to love.

This is my heart reaching out and closing up again, trying to know what it means to be loved, and learning what it means not to be.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

+ Every Family Has One +

In all family situations I am considered a black sheep. I would like to point out that in theory I shouldn't be. I honestly can find no discernible reason, other than my age, that I should be considered the black sheep. The biggest problem with my age is that most of my cousins are 9+ years older than I am and the other cousins I have are 9+ years younger than me. I am in the special awkward age gap that no one else can reach. As a result I spent way too much time with adults. I've been conversing with, presenting myself to, and speaking as an adult since I was about 12. As a result I'm pretty serious, mature, and appear older in most social situations, especially around my family. That's probably one of the reasons I am always mistaken as the older sister between Ajax and myself.

I'm not sure if I'll ever be considered anything other than a black sheep. Have I mentioned that on my father's side I was the first grandchild to graduate from college? I was working toward that goal since the age of 13. I always assumed Ajax would beat me out of it, though. I want to have a consistent career and complete my too many goals. I'm not sure what aspirations, if any, most of my other cousins have...particularly on my mother's side.

Anyway, being the awkward black sheep of the family it would only make sense that the family try to banish me to the back so that they could pretend I wasn't present at my cousin's wedding reception. I mean it would make total sense that they shove me with people I didn't know, away from all of my family I was there to visit. I admit, inside I was livid. I thought it was stupid that I had to be the one shoved away. I couldn't understand why they couldn't find a single family member of the (100+ members) for me to sit by that I knew. Especially knowing I came with my family and that I was friends/sista from anotha mista (and same mister) as three of the groomsmen. My second brother was the groom! And they couldn't pick at least one person I knew for me to be by? Am I that much of a loser/failure? In any case after my one statement of, "This is totally ridiculous" I left it at that and graciously went to the table of shame as I was placed at.

The problem is no one could predict the attitudes that would gain from The Dad and my uncle, Doctor Death (I'll explain about Doctor Death in a moment). The thing is...I'm kind of the adored lady of the family. At least with the extended family. I am the niece with the good head on my shoulders, witty, calm, brave, and endlessly intelligent. I have goals and I am used often as a positive example to all the other younger cousins (1st, 2nd, 3rd cousins - it doesn't matter). Doc Death was so not happy - partially because The Dad knows how to read me better than most. He could probably tell I was still so not thrilled about being put by myself. And partially Doc Death was not happy because The Dad said I wasn't. He happens to be fond of me and wants me happy. Oops.

So out of no where while I'm trying to be mature and just grin and bear the suckiness of being placed away from my extended family it's been almost a decade since last I saw, Doctor Death comes swooping in to attempt to save his damsel niece. He tells those at the table that sorry he is claiming his niece for his table and they will have to do without me. However, then there was no room for him which was totally not okay with me. Other people at our table got huffy that he was giving up his seat and then started getting ugly to me snapping why can't you just eat dinner over there? It's just for dinner what the hell is my problem? As if I asked for any of that? After a moment or two of rude comments to me I just shook my head and waltzed on out of there.

At that point I was drunk and upset. I ran into Mrs. Death (aka my gorgeous aunt) and wandered off into the bathroom where in my drunken state I got a little more emotional than I normally would have. I just wanted to be left alone. What was I s'posed to do? Where to go? I didn't ask for all that drama. Stupid family. Stupid weddings and chaos.

It was decided, while I was in the bathroom with Mrs. Death, that I would go back to the table that I was assigned to. She would play interference with Doctor Death and The Dad. Which worked all right. I went to the table I was supposed to be at, except naturally, someone else jacked my seat. I literally had nowhere to go at that point - rad.

I did what any sane person sick of family drama would do - head straight for the bar to get another Tom Collins or Whiskey Sour. Oh yes. Best idea ever. Especially considering that is where cornering number two happened and more people got in my face about how selfish and stupid I am. Where I once more peaced out and ended up drunk dialing Alyss, Bianca, Obi-Wan, Hamlet, and finally Dercetus.

It's funny how times like those you figure out who is willing to be there for you when you kind of need it. I didn't think in a million years it would have been Dercetus that would be the one who would answer no matter what. I mean he was at work and he still had the kindness to be there for me. I appreciated that - even in my drunken state. You know when you're crazy upset and you know it's irrational, but because you've been drinking it all seems totally justified? And you feel insane, but then you hear a friendly voice and things seem better so you just have to cry because you feel like you're not alone and that someone in the world gets you? Yeah, that moment happened on the phone last night. I heard his voice and was so grateful someone answered I just started crying. I'm cool like that.

I probably wouldn't have been so emotional and teary had I not gotten pretty acquainted with my new friend, Mr. Tom Collins. Drinking at family affairs might not be the best idea, but sometimes to deal with your insane family you can't be sober.

Anyway, after everyone stopped yelling at me I ended up at the Groomsmen Table as they had an empty seat and I had no where to go. Ajax and his friends graciously agreed to let me join them. I got an upgrade anyway. I later found out it was someone's brilliant idea to put me at a table with old men that were single to try to hook me up...the problem they forgot about is I'm a family member. Meaning I'm not going to hook up with my cousins - I don't care if they are third cousins or not; that is still gross just thinking about.

I want to admit I think it's lame that Hamlet blew me off after I'd answered his text questioning why I called and said that I called because I needed a friend as things were really sucky. He just never responded. He doesn't respond to anything anymore. I stopped trying like a month ago because he wouldn't respond. I have to admit I was a bit hurt, though. I thought we were supposed to be friends and instead I feel like we're nothing anymore. I hate losing people that I end up caring about. It sucks quite a bit. I guess it was bound to happen. I should have known better than to assume things might work out favorably. Really all I want to feel like we're still friends the way we used to be, but I feel like instead we went backwards.

After all the stupid family drama the wedding ended up pretty good.

OH! About Doctor Death - I'm giving my uncle that name because he definitely has the attitude of a mad scientist and supervillain. He's one of The Dad's brothers, and he is probably the most hilarious man ever. I adore Doc Death.

+ I Guess this is Growing Up +

I just think it's really crappy when 'friends' stop talking to you over quite literally nothing. When you do absolutely nothing wrong, yet somehow you're still interpretted as the bad guy. That seems to happen a lot, and then I go and rethink the events passed.

Surely if this happens more than once, you must be the one at fault, right? Yet I can't recall any instance in which it could be construed as my fault. I mean don't get me wrong - I have my faults. I know I do.

I'm not the best at playing nice. I think the world should work a certain way - and it should be dictated by logic. I tend to be unyielding when I fully believe I'm right. I have a strong sense of beliefs and I don't bend them for just anyone. I hate hate hate when my friends blow me off when I made plans with them first. Just because our plans sound less enticing, if you make plans with me don't just reject me. It gets old, fast. I get mad when I get walked all over - because I've put up with it way too much in my life. And when I place my trust in someone, in a friendship, I expect that they understand it's not something I do often.

I want more friends like the ones I can go days, weeks, months, years without talking to and it's like nothing has changed. When you feel yourself spilling things out that you can't even tell people who you've lived with for years. Those are the kinds of friends that tend to be the best. I do have a few like that, but not many of them live near me. Actually right now I'm not sure any of them live near me. Not a distance that we can meet up for a coffee and just chill. Hell, I'd make a dang five course meal every day if some of them would visit.

I don't know. I guess I'm just feeling lonely and I miss friends of mine that turned out not to be friends. I think it just is so unfair when you are in a friendship more than the other person involved. Because it just breaks you that much worse when they let you know how little you meant to them. Especially when you never wanted it to be that way.

I still am sitting here wondering what I did wrong. I don't have an answer why the people in mind won't talk to me anymore. I just don't understand. I feel as though I didn't do anything wrong. I guess you pick sides even when you don't know you're doing it. That's the only thing I can think of.
