+ 30 Day Book Challenge Day 2 +

A Book You've Read More than Three Times

Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran. This book is about the daughter of Cleopatra, Cleopatra Selene. It chronicles her life after her mother famously committed suicide using an egyptian asp. She was carted to Rome with her twin, Alexander Helios, and their younger brother and are raised by their father's ex-wife Octavia. Again the characterization is beyond perfect. The characters are likeable and the storyline believable.

I keep going back to this novel. There's something about it that I can't place, but it's amazing. It probably has to do with the fact I'm mesmerized by ancient civilizations and have a fascination with Egyptian royalty. To be fair, it's not just novels. I've also recently purchased documentaries on Ancient Civilizations including Egypt and Rome just for fun. I also recently bought statues of Anubis and Horus and an obelisk. Something about it just calls to me.

I've read other novels about Cleopatra Selene and find that this one by Michelle Moran is best. I read Lily of the Nile and its sequel Song of the Nile and found that while it was interesting it voyaged too much on magical realism that kind of turned me off to them. Plus, Stephanie Dray made me hate Juba II and Octavian - and kind of made me hate Selene, too. I would suggest Moran's version to anyone.
