+ A Childhood Hero +

A Childhood Hero

Goodness there are so many to choose from! I was big on Superheroes as a kiddie. I was such a tomboy. Who am I kidding? I still am, I just don't look it because trying to be a 'professional adult' has nipped that whole thing in the bud. It is no longer appropriate for me to wear my punk chokers or spikes... which is sad for me. I'm getting old.

I wandered off the track a bit there. Goodness which hero to choose?

Rogue?
Wolverine?
Frankenstein's monster (yes, I maintain he is a hero)?
 Psylocke?
The Silver Surfer?
Basil of Baker Street?
Sherlock Holmes?
Batman?
Spider Man?

As you can tell there are a number of choices. But I think it's about time I share my unyielding affection for the quick to a fight, Wolverine.

Wolverine has always had a special place in my heart. I know that sounds silly and ridiculous. But maybe it will make more sense once I tell you the reason.

So, since I was two I've hated the idea of missing out on things. Even if there's something I really don't want to do I'll end up caving because I just don't want to miss out. I guess it was like that even when I was two because the Mom and Ajax would forever be watching ridiculous movies like Leprechaun and Nightmare on Elm Street to give some examples. One night we were watching one of the movies, not sure which one, and I saw Freddy Krueger and I didn't like it. The Mom says that I got scared, but that baffles me because to this day I can't find a single movie to really horrify me and give me nightmares... I know, I've looked. She was trying to convince two year old me to go downstairs and hang out with the Dad, but I wasn't having it because I didn't want to be left out.

That night before I went to bed I must've looked a little pale because Ajax pulled me aside and was just like, "Don't worry, Wolverine could totally rip Freddy Krueger to shreds without even thinking. Wouldn't even have to re-heal himself once." He then went to his room and got me a Wolverine action figure to take to my room to sleep next to me.

And that is where my love of Wolverine began. To this day I'm still ridiculously fond of the Marvel Hero. While at work I got into a debate on why Wolverine would totally own Freddy Krueger in a fight - neither of us won over the other one. But I still know in my heart and in my dreams Wolverine would always win - I don't care if Freddy Krueger invaded Wolverine's dreams. He still could not out due my favorite hot-headed hero.

It could also be why Wolverine still has a place on my wall. The newspaper was cool back in the day and slipped in movie posters and such. I've had one of Wolverine/Hugh Jackman on my wall since X2 went into theaters.

The funnier thing still? After that night my brother convinced me Wolverine would always win against the monsters in the night I've never had a problem with a scary movie. I never worried about monsters under my bed, or Chucky for that matter. I never had to make my parents check my closet for me. I never worried about things that go bump in the night...

  1. Good list of childhood Heroes.

I'm dating myself by saying mine was The Fonz on Happy days, Andy Griffith, and Spiderman, and as corny as it sounds my DAD.

But I have to admit that Woverine IS cool :)
